This body of work, Acacia Karroo, delves into the intersections of the manufactured and the organic, light and shadow, and their perceptual interplay. The shadowed imagery embodies a sense of security and sanctuary, while inviting viewers to consider the boundaries between these dualities.The photographic series extends the exploration initiated by the sculptural work, focusing on the dynamic relationship between light, form, and shadow. These images underscore the sculpture's dual identity, revealing how perspective can transform its essence from the organic to the artificial.Rooted in historical and personal narratives, the work reflects on territories and ecologies as interconnected spaces, shaped by both natural forces and human interventions. The thorned branches of the ‘Acacia karroo’ tree, pivotal to the artist's ancestral story, serve as the conceptual anchor. The Boers, the artist’s ancestors, utilized these thorned branches to fortify circular laagers during their migration through South Africa—structures that symbolized both protection and a dependence on nature for survival.The sculpture itself reinterprets this historical practice, with entwined and ascending branches rendered not from organic material, but from wire, paper tape, and cable ties. This deliberate materiality creates a tension between the natural and the constructed, prompting reflection on humanity’s simultaneous reliance on and manipulation of the environment.The photographic series furthers this narrative, transforming the sculptural work through the language of light and shadow. The shadows cast by the sculpture, ephemeral and intangible, echo its conceptual themes, evoking fragility and resilience.
