Facilities and Affiliated Institutions

This is a place to store and rent equipment for media (photography, holography, video, media art). In addition to the equipment already provided and installed in each room, all equipment is systematically maintained and students can rent and use them whenever necessary.

A workroom for digital art and a facility where students can use computers and the Internet for their personal uses. Among digital art, this lab is mainly for digital photography, basic video editing and computer programming-related classes. For basic work, computers and other external equipment such as printers and scanners are equipped.

This is a facility for professional video editing and post production. There are two rooms equipped with video editing systems, individual editing rooms equipped with professional sound and image editing programs and one room for lectures, video watching and video editing. This room is equipped with a sound mixer that can work with sound input through various external devices and an audio system that can work with sound software.

Korea's only large-format hologram production facility. It has the latest equipment and facilities such as anti-vibration optical table with 5.4mⅹ4.2m, 4.8mⅹ7.2m, 2W DPSS Green laser, 8W DPSS Green laser, argon, krypton, helium-neon laser, etc. It is equipped with a developing room, display room, lecture room and laminating room to maintain an environment where students can work conveniently. and are offered in the Undergraduate Program and are offered in the Graduate Program.

This is a workshop where students can effectively express their ideas by understanding the characteristics of wood materials and how to use various woodworking machines. The equipment includes circular table saws, cutting machines, chisel machine, router and band saws.

It is a workshop where students can use machines such as welding machines and cutting machines to understand the characteristics of metal materials and create various formative works using the characteristics of the materials.

The model room is a high-tech, mechanized workshop that converts design, model, molding and art works into data and uses computers to work on things that were previously done manually. Various materials and chemicals are used and they are actively involved in their works by interacting with technical companies. CAD, CAM, DNC programs are used, CNC machines, RP printers, laser cutters, 3D measuring machines, vacuum molding machines, vacuum forming machines, plane engraving machines, mini lathes and painting booths are used to create an   d research works.

There is a melting furnace that heats and melts glass in the workshop, so it is possible to create various works using hot working techniques. In addition, students can experience various genres of glass formative art through casting techniques using a kiln and the cold working technique associated with it.

Through various indirect printmaking techniques and orthodox printmaking techniques such as copperplate, lithograph, woodcut and silk screen, students can learn creative ideas and a variety of formative expressions. There are and and for the 3rd year class focuses on the use of various indirect techniques and the advanced expression of printmaking learned in the 2nd year. Students can work from basic indirect techniques using plate to precise techniques of authentic printmaking. Through drawing - etching – inking and printing, students will understand the process of the work. As for the facilities, copperplate room for copperplate printing and silk screen printing and a lithograph room for woodcutting and lithography. In particular, in the case of lithographs, a large amount of marble collected in Germany is directly used in the class.

Learn creative ideas and variety of formative expressions through understanding and learning the medium of clay in the formative arts. There are and classes and students can work from basic molding techniques using clay to casting techniques using plaster molds. Facilities include a ceramic molding room, wheel throwing room, a ceramic plaster molding room, a glaze room and a kiln room with several gas kilns and electric kilns.

5 large plotters, laser printers and scanners are equipped to provide an environment for design and other work.

The 200㎡ photoshoot studio is equipped with a full set of strobe equipment, a full set of automatic backgrounds and a full set of digital cameras. It is equipped with a ventilation device, air conditioning/heating device and humidity control device for a pleasant environment and a large entrance door allows access to set devices and large objects. The digital images taken are configured to enable high-resolution output with workstation-class cup computers, imacon scanners, Eizo monitors and large-format output equipment in the photo digital photo lab.
 

Since its opening in August 2003, Gallery175, located in Jahamun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul hosts various exhibitions, including the graduation shows for both the undergraduate and graduate programs, special exhibitions for the selected artists of Gallery175 exhibition contest, solo exhibitions, international exchange exhibitions and Center for Visual Studies' own exhibitions. It is trying to provide opportunities as new artists and planners to students, completed students and graduates of Korea National University of Arts and to hold and plan various and experimental exhibitions. Gallery175 aims to play a role that crosses the boundaries of culture as a whole, not a space limited to a consistent genre of art.

GalleryB104 is open to all students of Korea National University of Arts. It receives proposals from students and provides the space every semester. It is an opportunity for students to gain the experience of organizing and practicing exhibitions and it can be an expanded venue for their practice in art.

Established in March 2010, Department of Art Theory Gallery is a space designed to encourage Department of Art Theory students to practice the entire process of planning an exhibition. It is also called as the 'Corridor Gallery' in the sense that a part of the corridor on the second floor is used as an exhibition space.

It is always open for proposals from Department of Art Theory students and graduates. Through the Corridor Gallery, students express the results of their classes or topics of interest in the form of exhibitions and experience interaction with students from other departments and schools.

In 1997, right after the foundation of School of Visual Arts, the Center for Visual Studies was established to lay the groundwork for qualitative improvement of research activities and creative activities throughout the Fine Arts. In particular, it was established to create a high-quality art culture through cooperation between art and industrial economy and to narrow the distance between art and the general public. Center for Visual Studies consists of professors of the School of Visual Arts and if necessary, commissions special members outside School of Visual Arts or outside Korea National University of Arts. The School of Visual Arts has been presenting educational achievements focused on exhibitions and publications and supporting the activities of graduates and current students.

The projects carried out by the Center for Visual Studies are largely divided into operation of galleries on and off campus and publication of『Visual』.

It operated KNUA Gallery and Gallery126, which opened in October 2000. It provides many School of Visual Arts students with exhibition opportunities on Gallery175, an off-campus gallery opened in August 2003 (currently located in Jahamun-ro, Jongno-gu) and GalleryB104, an on-campus gallery. Currently, it supports and plans exhibitions of graduates and students through regular competitions every year and it is in charge of managing galleries inside and outside the campus.

Publication of 『Visual』, another project Center for Visual Studies, aims to provide a theoretical foundation for art creation activities through in-depth analysis and research on art and visual culture. Through timely planning, 『Visual』 aims to satisfy the intellectual needs of readers with a master's degree or higher in art colleges and contribute to build a rich discourse around the art world.

Starting with the feature 'Restating Paintings' of the first issue in 2002, 『Visual』 has been published on a variety of topics such as ‘Placeness ', 'Art in Visual Culture', 'Arts, Money and Power', ‘Art and Society’ and 'The Pandemic Society and Art’.

Creative Studio, which opened in March 2016, is the first residency program in Korea established in a university and is located in Changjo-gwan on the Seokgwan Campus of Korea National University of Arts. Regardless of whether they are K-Arts graduates or not, a total of 8 residency artists are selected in Ceramic/Glass Art, Media Arts, Sculpture & Installation and Fine Art in the field of visual arts. Residency artists selected through an annual public contest are allowed to use the workspace and on-campus facility infrastructure and creative activities are supported through residency programs such as Open Studio, Student Connection Program, Residency Artists - Critics Matching Activity, Exhibition and English translation of artist's work notes, etc. They can use the workspace 24 hours a day. The occupancy period is one year, moving in in March of each year and moving out in February of the following year.

매체(사진, 홀로그래피, 비디오, 미디어아트)를 위한 장비를 보관, 대여하는 곳으로 각 실에 이미 비치, 설치된 장비들 외에 모든 장비를 체계적으로 정비하고 학생들은 이것들을 개인적으로 필요할 때마다 대여하여 사용할 수 있다.

디지털 아트를 위한 작업실과 학생들이 개인적으로 필요한 컴퓨터와 인터넷을 사용하는 시설로 디지털 아트 중 디지털 사진과 기초 비디오 편집 그리고 컴퓨터 프로그래밍 관련 수업이 주로 이루어진다. 기본적인 작업을 위해 컴퓨터와 그 외 프린터, 스캐너 등 외부 장비 등이 갖춰져 있다.

전문적인 비디오 편집실과 포스트 프로덕션을 위한 시설이다. 비디오 편집 시스템이 갖춰진 두 실과 사운드와 영상의 전문 편집 프로그램이 설치된 개개의 편집실 그리고 공동으로 강의, 영상감상, 비디오 편집을 위한 실이 하나가 있다. 이 실에는 다양한 외부 장치를 통해 입력한 사운드를 가지고 작업할 수 있는 사운드 믹서와 사운드 소프트웨어를 가지고 작업할 수 있는 오디오 시스템이 설치되어 있다.

국내 유일의 대형포맷 홀로그램을 제작할 수 있도록 구성되어 있다. 5.4mⅹ4.2m, 4.8mⅹ7.2m의 진동방지 광학테이블과 2W DPSS Green laser, 8W DPSS Green laser, 아르곤, 크립톤, 헬륨네온레이저 등 최신 장비와 설비를 보유하고 있다. 현상실, 디스플레이실, 강의실 및 라미네이팅실을 갖추고 있어서 학생들이 편리하게 작업할 수 있는 환경을 유지하고 있다. 예술사과정에는 <사진과 홀로그래피 1, 2>, <창작사진 1, 2> 과목이 개설되어 있으며, 예술전문사과정에는 <전공스튜디오 1~4>가 개설되어 있다.

나무 재료의 특성 파악과 다양한 목공기계 사용법을 숙지하여 원하는 아이디어를 효과적으로 표현할 수 있는 공방이다. 기자재는 원형테이블쏘, 컷팅기, 각끌기, 루타기, 밴드쏘 등이 있다.

용접기, 절단기 등의 기계를 이용하여 금속 재료의 특성 파악과 재료가 가지는 특성을 이용하여 다양한 조형 작품을 창작할 수 있는 공방이다.

모델실은 디자인, 모형, 조형, 예술 작품을 데이터화하여 과거에는 수작업하였던 것을, 컴퓨터를 이용하여 작업하는 기계화된 첨단 공방이다. 다양한 소재와 화공 약품들을 이용하고 기술적 전문업체와 교류하며 작품에 넓은 활약을 하고 있다. CAD, CAM, DNC의 프로그램 이용하고 CNC 머신, RP 프린트, 레이저 커트기, 3차원 측정기, 진공 주형기, 진공 성형기, 평면 조각기, 미니선반, 도장부스 등을 이용하여 작품을 제작하고 연구한다.

공방 내 유리를 뜨겁게 가열하여 녹이는 용해로가 비치되어 있어 이를 이용한 핫 워킹 기법을 통한 다양한 작품 창작이 가능하다. 또한, 가마를 이용한 캐스팅 기법과 이와 연결된 콜드 워킹 기법을 통해 유리 조형예술의 다양한 장르를 경험할 수 있다.

다양한 간접판화기법과 정통판화기법인 동판화, 석판화, 목판화, 실크스크린을 통해서 창의적 발상과 이를 통한 조형적 표현의 다양함을 배울 수 있다. 개설 수업으로는 <기초판화 1, 2>와 <창작판화 1, 2>가 있으며, 3학년 <창작판화 1, 2> 수업은 다양한 간접기법의 활용과 2학년 때 배운 판화의 심화 표현에 중점을 둔다. 판면을 이용한 기초적인 간접기법에서부터 정통판화의 정밀한 기법까지 작업을 할 수 있다. 드로잉-판면작업-잉킹해서 찍기를 통해 작업의 과정을 이해하게 된다. 이용시설로는 동판화와 실크스크린을 할 수 있는 동판화실과 목판화와 석판화를 할 수 있는 석판화실이있다. 특히 석판화의 경우, 독일에서 채취한 다량의 대리석을 직접 수업에 사용하고 있다.

조형예술에서 흙이라는 매체를 이해하고 습득함으로써 창의적 발상과 이를 통한 조형적 표현의 다양함을 배울 수 있다. 개설 수업으로는 < 기초도자>와 <도자> 수업이 있으며, 흙을 이용한 기초적인 성형기법에서부터 석고몰드를 이용한 캐스팅 기법을 통해 작업을 할 수 있다. 이용시설로는 도자조형실, 물레성형실, 도자석고성형실, 유약실 및 여러 대의 가스가마 및 전기가마가 있는 가마실이 있다.

대형플로터 5대와 레이져 프린트 및 스캐너 등이 구비되어 있어 설계 및 기타 작업의 환경을 제공한다.

60평 규모의 촬영 스튜디오에는 스트로보 장비 풀세트, 자동 배경 풀세트, 디지털카메라 풀세트 등이 갖추어져 있다. 환풍 장치와 냉·온방 장치 그리고 습도조절 장치로 쾌적한 환경으로 설비되어 있으며 대형 출입문이 있어서 세트 장치, 대형 오브제 등의 출입이 가능하다. 촬영된 디지털 이미지들은 디지털 사진랩에서 워크스테이션급 컴퓨터, 이마콘 스캐너, 에이조 모니터 그리고 대형 출력 장비들로 고해상도 출력이 가능하도록 구성되어 있다. 

서울시 종로구 자하문로에 위치한 갤러리175는 2003년 8월 개관 이래 예술사 및 전문사 졸업전시를 비롯하여, 갤러리175 전시 공모에 당선된 기획전 및 개인전과 국제교류전, 조형연구소 자체 기획전 등을 개최한다. 한국예술종합학교의 재학생, 수료생, 졸업생에게 신진 작가 및 기획자로서의 기회를 제공하고 다양하고 실험적인 전시들을 개최, 기획하고자 노력하고 있다. 갤러리175는 미술이라는 일관된 장르에만 국한된 공간이 아닌 문화 전반의 경계를 가로지르는 역할을 담당하고자 한다.

갤러리B104는 한국예술종합학교 미술원 학생 누구나 참여가능하며, 매 학기 학생들의 기획안을 접수하여 전시 기회를 제공한다. 학생들이 직접 진행하고 실천하는 전시의 경험을 얻을 수 있는 기회가 되며, 실습장의 확장 공간이 될 수 있다.

2010년 3월에 설립된 미술이론과 갤러리는 미술이론과 학생들이 전시를 기획하는 과정 전반을 실습하도록 독려하고자 마련된 공간으로서, 미술원 2층 복도 일부를 전시 공간으로 활용한다는 점에서 ‘복도갤러리’로도 불린다.

   미술이론과 재학생 및 졸업생의 기획안을 상시 공모하고 있으며, 복도갤러리를 통해 학생들은 수업의 결과물이나 저마다의 관심 주제를 전시의 형태로 표현하고, 타과 및 타교 학생들과의 교류를 경험한다.

조형연구소는 미술원 개원 직후인 1997년, 조형예술 전반에 걸친 연구활동과 창작활동의 질적 향상을 위한 토대를 마련하고, 특히 미술과 산업경제의 협동을 통한 수준 높은 미술문화를 만들어 나가고, 일반 대중과 미술의 거리를 좁히기 위해 설립되었다. 본 연구소는 본교 미술원 교수들로 구성되며 필요시 원외 혹은 교외에서 특별연구원을 위촉하여, 현재까지 전시, 출판을 중심으로 미술원의 교육 성과를 발표하고 졸업생 및 재학생의 활동을 지원하고 있다.

   조형연구소가 진행하는 사업은 교내외 전시장 운영과 『Visual』 출판으로 크게 나뉜다.

   2000년 10월에 개관한 KNUA 갤러리와 갤러리126를 운영하였으며, 2003년 8월에 개관한 교외 전시장인 갤러리175(현재 종로구 자하문로에 위치)와 교내 전시장인 갤러리B104를 통해 많은 미술원 학생들에게 전시 기회를 제공하고 있다. 현재, 매년 정기공모를 통해 졸업생 및 재학생의 전시를 지원하고 진행하고 있으며, 교내외 전시장 관리를 담당하고 있다.

   조형연구소의 또 하나의 사업인 『Visual』 출판은 미술 및 시각문화에 대한 심층적인 분석과 연구를 통해 미술창작 활동의 이론적인 기반을 제공하고자 한다. 『Visual』은 시의성 있는 기획을 통해 미술대학 석사과정 이상 독자들의 지적인 욕구를 충족시키고 미술계 저변의 풍요로운 담론을 구축하는 데 기여하고자, 2002년 창간호 ‘회화를 다시 말한다’를 시작으로 현재까지 ‘장소성’, ‘시각문화 속의 미술’, ‘미술, 돈, 권력’, ‘예술과 사회’, ‘팬데믹 사회와 미술’ 등의 다양한 주제로 발행되고 있다.

2016년 3월 개소한 창작스튜디오는 국내 최초로 대학 내에 설치된 레지던시로 한국예술종합학교 석관동 캠퍼스 창조관에 위치한다. 한국예술종합학교 출신 여부와 관계없이, 시각예술 분야의 도자·유리, 매체, 입체, 평면에서 총 8명의 입주작가를 선발한다. 매년 공모를 통해 선발된 입주작가들에게 작업 공간과 교내 시설 인프라를 이용할 수 있도록 지원하며, 오픈스튜디오, 재학생 연계 프로그램, 비평가 매칭, 전시, 작가 작업 노트 영문 번역 등의 입주 프로그램을 통해 창작 활동을 지원하고 있다. 작업 공간은 24시간 이용할 수 있으며, 입주 기간은 1년으로, 매년 3월 입주하여 이듬해 2월 퇴소한다.
