This work is an archive of manhole covers collected following the project theme of ‘finding graphics hidden in the city’.
I started with a question: “What unique graphic can tourists find only when physically visiting the city?” My answer to the question is manhole covers as they can only be found when one walks in the city. Manhole covers have various meanings; they can be seen in our everyday lives and they are patterned, almost like tiles. They are the signature image of some road maintenance companies.
They are one of the significant graphics representing cities. An image of a manhole cover which has been worn down by pedestrian traffic shows not only the physical road but the characteristics of the space. I collected those images of manhole covers and organized them as a map.

이 작업은 ‘도시의 숨겨진 그래픽을 찾기’라는 주제로 진행된 맨홀 뚜껑 그래픽에 대한 아카이브다.
모든 풍경이 기록되고, 데이터로 확인이 가능한 시대에 ‘관광객이 오롯이 현지에서만 발견할 수 있는 그래픽은 무엇인가’라는 질문으로 작업을 시작했다. 그 질문에 대한 개인적인 대답으로, 걸어야만 발견할 수 있는 그래픽인 맨홀 뚜껑에 관심을 갖게 되었다.
맨홀 뚜껑은 다양한 의미를 갖고 있다. 일종의 풍경이 될 수도 있고, 타일과 함께하는 패턴이 될 수도 있다. 그것은 도시를 이루는 제반 시설 회사들의 대표적인 간판이기도 하고, 도시를 이루고 있는 가장 주요한 그래픽이기도 하다. 사람들의 걸음에 의해 변형된 다양한 맨홀의 이미지는 길 뿐만 아니라 장소의 성격과 특징을 보여주기도 한다.
맨홀의 이미지를 수집하고, 그에 대한 장소기록을 정리했다. 이 작업으로 맨홀 뚜껑의 이미지가 장소에 대한 기념비적 역할을 갖기를 기대한다.
