Is it possible to rot in virtual space?
A lizard cuts off its tail once in a lifetime when caught in danger. The new one that grows after amputation never falls off again. We can never assure if this new version of the tail is in the same shape as the old one. I picture – How does the lost end look? How many times in our life can we ever witness the lost tails?
The word “parkour” comes from the French word, “Parcours,” which means “journey.” The parkour practitioners retain the life attitude as the pioneer of one’s own life and freely interact with the environment they belong to while training movements based on thorough practice. For the practitioners, the parkour is something that does not rot like a lizard’s tail. In what ways does the existing “body” move in the condition of impending death? For humanity, the parkour whose existence is a direct opposite to the cyborg, the body of the perfect reproduction and temporality, is a journey both to the most primitive past and the unpredictable future. The era of immorality in which people give up on their human bodies and continue their life in the form of data will soon arrive. The parkour will remain the “future that does not rot” and the “present that was amputated.”

도마뱀은 일생에 단 한번 자신이 위험한 상황에 처하면 꼬리를 자절한다. 자절 후 재생된 새로운 꼬리는 다시는 잘려지지 않으며, 우리는 이 새로운 버전의 꼬리가 과연 이전의 것과 동일한 형태일지 절대 확신할 수 없다. 상상해보건대, 잘린 꼬리는 어떠한 모습인가? 우리는 일생에 몇 번의 잘린 꼬리를 발견할 수 있는가?
파쿠르(Parkour)는 프랑스어 ‘Parcours’에서 파생되었으며 ‘여정(journey)’ 을 의미한다. 파쿠르 수련자들은 자신이 속한 환경과 자유롭게 상호작용하면서 자기 자신의 고유한 길을 개척하는 삶의 태도를 지니고, 철저한 실천에 기반한 움직임을 훈련한다. 수련자들에게 파쿠르는 마치 도마뱀의 꼬리처럼 ‘썩지 않는 어떤 것’이다. 죽음 직전의 실재하는 ‘몸’ 은 어떠한 움직임을 가지는가? 완벽한 재생산과 완전한 무시간성의 신체, 사이보그의 반대 선상에 존재하는 파쿠르는 인류에게 남아 있는 가장 원초적인 과거로, 예측할 수 없는 미래로 향하는 여정이다. 곧 신체를 포기하고 데이터로 영생이 가능할 수 있는 시대가 올 것이며, 파쿠르는 ‘썩지 않는 미래’이자 ‘자절된 현재’로 남아 있을 것이다.
About Artist
Kim Hyojae is a modern artist who contemplates the new humankind’s default, meta-clone, and transition of data between human beings in the forms of video and performance. In the transitional reality, where everything reduces to the data, Kim Hyojae has been inquiring into a post-truth question, “default.” At the same time, Kim has been persistently indicating the new identity that comes after the destruction of history in which life and death, social convention and order, truth and post-truth, and the virtual and the real co-exist.
Kim participated in numerous exhibitions, including “Set Up Your Profiles” (Coreana Museum of Art, 2020), “Follow, Flow, Feed: the Feed I Live In” (Arko Art Center, 2020), and “Ghost Coming 2020 {X-Room} (Ilmin Museum of Art, 2020). She plans on an exhibition, “NARS Foundation,” in New York 2022 through an artist residency program.
