Megumi Okawa

After I arrived in Seoul, I began growing radishes in a small pot. They grew so well that the leaves overflowed from the pot in two months. Thus, I repotted them into a larger one. At that time, I thinned out some weak seedlings so that healthier ones would grow larger. The next day, however, all the remaining radishes became fatally weak. Trees exchange nutrients with each other through their roots and fungi. Moreover, apparently, they can receive the danger signals from their neighbors via this underground network. That warning never reached me. I am currently seeking the way to de-center humankind through communicating with non-human aliens, SCOBY (Symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast). I am struggling to leap from this minutely well-constructed world.
 
Megumi is an artist. She works in various forms such as wooden sculptures and voice recordings, and exhibits them in installations. She aims to bring attention back to the voices which have been devalued in the history of humankind. In recent works, she has created installations in order to inherit disappearing or disappeared narratives through her works. She also formed an artist collective ‘the fuu’ in 2019, which aim to raise awareness of feminism through artworks or workshops. They strongly hope that their action will establish the importance of women’s solidarity especially in Japan.

서울에 도착한 후, 나는 작은 화분에 상추를 기르기 시작했다. 상추는 너무 잘 자라서 두 달 만에 화분에서 잎이 넘쳐났다. 나는 상추를 더 큰 화분으로 분갈이를 해주었다. 그때 나는 더 건강한 묘목이 더 크게 자랄 수 있도록 약한 묘목을 걸러내었다. 그러나 다음날 모든 상추가 전부 약해져 있었다. 나무는 뿌리와 균류를 통해 자신들의 영양분을 교환한다. 더불어 그들은 땅속 네트워크를 통해 위험 신호를 수신할 수도 있다. 그 경고는 내게 도달한 적이 없다. 나는 계속해서 스코비(박테리와 효모의 공생)와 같은 형태의 인본주의적 관점을 벗어난 방식의 소통을 탐구하고 있다. 나는 세세하게 잘 구성된 세계에서 도약하기 위해 고군분투하고 있다. 
 
 
 
 
메구미는 예술가이다. 그의 작업은 나무 조각, 목소리 수집 등 다양한 형태를 설치로 나타낸다. 그는 역사에서 평가절하된 목소리에 다시 집중하는 것을 목표로 한다. 최근 작업에서 그는 사라지는 혹은 사라진 서사를 설치를 통해 보여주고자 하였다. 그는 또한 작품이나 워크샵을 통해 페미니즘의 인식을 고양시키기 위한 목표로 2019년 미술 콜렉티브 ‘the fuu’를 결정하였다. 그들의 행동을 통해, 특히 일본 여성 연대의 중요성을 만들어내기를 강력하게 바란다.
