Bathers, laundresses, fishermen and workers used to work with the Loire, the river that crosses the city of Nantes. Since industrialisation, our relationship with the river has changed. Pollution, siltation, stagnation, toxic bacteria and algae led the Nantes authorities to ban direct contact with the water. Our image of the river has changed and access to it has gradually disappeared.
If swimming can be seen as a simple leisure activity, it could also change our relationship with the river. It requires knowledge and respect for the dimension of watercourses, because it makes our bodies vulnerable. In this way, through the conscious river practice, we can truly reconnect with the river.
Today, in Nantes, projects for the development of the banks of the Loire could be launched so that its inhabitants can(re)bathe in the river. This project highlights political and environmental issues in our understanding of the territory.
During the workshop, I became interested in the notices against bathing that circulated in the city of Nantes in the 19th century. By immersing the ban in the waters of the Loire, the established order is overturned. I'm questioning our present and future relationship with the river. Will we reconnect with the Loire ? In what way?
The installation follows the Loire to form a ‘river of images’. It superimposes the ban on a dreamed image: a reality where people are still connected to the river.

목욕하는 사람들, 빨래하는 사람들, 어부들 그리고. 노동자들의 생활 속에는 낭트를 가로지르는 루아르강이 함께 하곤 하였다. 산업화 이후, 강과 우리의 관계는 변하였다. 오염, 침전, 강물 정체, 유독성 박테리아 및 조류(藻類)를 이유로 낭트 당국은 물과의 직접적인 접촉을 금지하였다. 강에 대한 우리의 인식이 변화하였고, 점차 강에 접근하지 않게 되었다.
“수영을 단순한 여가 활동으로 볼 수도 있겠지만, 수영은 우리가 강과 맺는 관계를 변화시킬 수 있습니다. 강에서 수영하기 위해서는 물줄기에 대한 상당한 지식과 신중함이 필요합니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 그러한 행위로 하여금 우리의 신체를 취약한 상태에 노출시키게 되기 때문입니다. 이처럼 강에서 의식적으로 행하는 활동을 통해 우리는 다시 강과 진정으로 이어질 수 있습니다.”
오늘날 낭트시는 도시민들이 루아르강에(다시) 몸을 담글 수 있도록 강변 개발 프로젝트를 추진해도 좋을 것이다. 이러한 프로젝트는 영토에 대한 우리의 이해력을 정치적이고 환경적인 측면에서 부각시키는 효과를 갖는다.
워크숍이 진행되는 동안, 나는 19세기 낭트에 유포되었던 목욕 금지령에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 루아르강에 몸을 담그는 것을 금지함으로써 기존의 질서가 뒤집힌다. 이제 우리와 강 사이의 현재 그리고 미래에 관해 물음을 던져본다. 우리는 루아르 강과 다시 연결될 수 있을까? 어떠한 방식으로?
이 설치 작품은 루아르 강을 따라 ‘이미지들의 강’을 형성한다. 이 금지된 강은, 사람들이 여전히 강과 연결된 현실을 갈망하는 이미지 위에 포개어져 있다.

Ines Miossec is a young French artist based in Nantes. After obtaining her bachelor's degree in art in Brest, she joined the Nantes School of Fine Arts for her master's degree. She studied few months in Mexico City to learn sound and sound installation. Inès specialises in video and has just completed her first film.
