TRANSFORMATIVE MEMORIES

Each voice is meant to echo and disappear in the sound atmosphere of the Loire river. But amongst the memories that echo the banks of the Loire, there is one that will never disappear: the memory of slavery. Back when slavery was both legal and flourishing, it allowed the city of Nantes to thrive. Today, it makes us lower our eyes with shame, when confronted to this highly illegal and imperialistic crime, that the city largely contributed to. On this territory, where the cries of perishing slaves resonated, Marion Moana David remembers the Rwandan genocide related documents that she used to work on as a Human Rights lawyer. This is the moment when a historical and collective memory meets a personal one. The sounds of those memories are meeting each other, transforming each other, and overlapping. They are travelling from one bank of the Loire to the other. Travelling across the river, from the Memorial for the abolition of slavery to the Law court nearby. And it is the territory itself that actually remembers the voices of the unknowns. In silence, their echoes remain, from which no words can be perceived anymore amongst the different layers of sound.

각각의 목소리는 루아르 강의 음향 속에서 울려 퍼지고 사라지도록 의도되었다. 그러나 루아르 강변에 울려 퍼지는 기억 중에는 결코 사라지지 않을 하나의 기억이 있다. 바로 노예제의 기억. 노예제가 합법적으로 횡행하던 시기에 낭트는 노예제 덕분에 번영하였다. 오늘날, 이 도시의 역사의 한 켠을 차지한 이토록 불법적이며 제국주의적인 범죄를 마주한 우리는 부끄러움에 고개를 숙인다. 노예들의 비명이 울려 퍼졌던 이 땅에서 마리옹 모아나 다비드는 인권변호사로 활동할 당시 다뤘던 르완다 제노사이드에 관한 문서를 떠올린다. 그렇게 역사와 집단의 기억이 개인의 기억과 만난다. 그 기억들을 실은 소리들은 맞부딪쳐 서로를 변화시키고 중첩된다. 그리고는 루아르 강둑 한편에서 다른 한편으로 여행한다. 루아르 강을 가로지르며, 노예제 폐지 기념관에서부터 근방의 법원까지 소리들은 흐른다. 낭트의 땅은 이름없는 그들의 목소리를 기억한다. 수많은 소리가 뒤섞인 가운데 이제는 더 이상 알아들을 수 없는 그들의 말은 침묵 속에 메아리친다.

Marion Moana David is pursuing her final year in the Fine Arts School of Nantes (France), after a short career as a Human Rights lawyer. Her plastic work mainly deals with the interaction between a collective and personal memory, but also the impact of a loss of memory and the act of documenting and archiving all sorts of documents and images, both personal and collective. Her work mainly consists of installations, that include images, sound pieces, and films

마리옹 모아나 다비드는 인권 변호사로서 짧은 경력을 뒤로 한 후 현재 프랑스 낭트 미대에서 마지막 학년을 보내고 있다. 그녀의 조형작업은 집단기억과 개인기억 사이의 상호작용의 문제에 집중하며, 더 나아가 기억상실로 인한 영향 그리고 개인과 집단 차원에서 다양한 문서와 이미지를 기록하고 보관하는 일에도 주목한다. 주로 이미지, 사운드 작품 및 영상으로 구성된 설치작품을 제작한다.
